Collection Development
Collection development is a term librarians use to describe, "the process of planning and building a useful and balanced collection of library materials over a period of years . . . normally constrained by budgetary limitations." (Reitz, Online Dictionary for Library and Information Science)
At the University of Southern Mississippi, the selection of library resources is a cooperative effort of faculty both inside and outside University Libraries. Librarians collaborate with faculty outside the Libraries to build a collection of information resources that meet the teaching, learning, and research needs of undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty. For Cook Library on the Hattiesburg campus, each academic program works through a designated faculty liaison to recommend books, databases, journals, media, and other resources that best support the teaching and research interests of the unit. Librarians at all libraries are responsible for selecting titles to replace lost and damaged books and media, for ordering titles in subject areas where input from faculty leaves funds unspent, and may also carry out collection development special projects when funds are available.
