Science Café - Fish Medicine - Jan. 30, 2012

The University of Southern Mississippi Libraries' first Science Café for the spring series, Fish Medicine,will be held Monday, January 30, 2012 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Cook Library Art Gallery (LIB 105A), located next to Starbucks. It will feature Fish Medicine.

More Americans own fish than dogs or cats these days. But what's more interesting is that people's attitudes about fish are actually changing. They're not just things you keep around the house for decoration anymore. These are pets. Companions that people bond with, care about. Pet owners are turning to veterinary medicine for costly treatments of their goldfish, koi, and other fish. In this emerging branch of veterinary science, there are now "fish vet" specialists who are performing X-rays, ultrasounds, CAT scans, and MRIs. There are no limits other than what pet owners are willing to spend. The discussion will be led by Dr. Jake Schaefer, Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences & Curator of the University Ichthyology Collection (Fish Museum).

A Science Café casual meeting place, plain language, and inclusive conversation create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for people who may have no science background. Each meeting is organized around an interesting scientific topic where a scientist gives a brief presentation and shows a short video clip to kick off the discussion.
