Resource of the Month - Black Studies in Video

Each month, University Libraries highlights a resource from its collections. This month, in celebration of Black History Month, we are featuring Black Studies in Video from Alexander Street Press.

Black Studies in Video is a streaming media database that includes documentaries, interviews, and archival footage covering African American history, politics, art and culture, family structure, gender relationships, and social and economic issues. Containing over 500 hours of streaming video, this database includes primary and secondary resource materials that will inspire, educate, and engage students examining issues of racial justice and diversity.

Black Studies in Video features a user-friendly interface where users can browse by theme, people, and topics. The database also offers combinable search fields that allow users to cross-search video transcripts, notes, bibliographic data (including series, title, country of origin, publication date, narrator, production staff, and more), and many other indexed fields.

Black Studies in Video utilizes Alexander Street Press's advanced online interface which offers an array of additional features to enhance teaching and learning experiences for instructors and students, including video clip-making tools, personalized playlists, and annotation tools that enable instructors to integrate content straight into their syllabus or Canvas course. Unlike DVDS, Alexander Street Press provided online streaming that allows for unlimited simultaneous viewing both on-campus and off. Additionally, the powerful interface makes videos accessible by providing synchronized, searchable, scrolling transcripts that run alongside each video.
