The Gulf Coast Library is pleased to present “The Art of Joy Jennings.” The exhibit will be on display on all three floors of the Gulf Coast Library beginning February 3rd, with a reception honoring the artist scheduled for February 19, 2015, in the lobby 4-6 p.m. Guests will be able to meet Jennings and purchase some of the works on display.
This collection is oil on canvas, and includes landscapes of France, cityscapes of New Orleans and scenes from Mississippi, as well as some still life. Jennings’ paintings express an awareness of “the movement of the lines in the painting, in the placement of color and reflection of light.” Her goal is to allow one “to see the sacred in the ordinary.”
For many years she studied and taught ballet. Dance also led her to study French, the language of ballet. After receiving a Masters of Arts in French, Jennings taught French and continued to travel and study in France. While teaching French, she designed simple art projects to enhance teaching the language. This move led her to enroll in oil painting classes, attend art workshops and retreats which focused on art and spirituality. In Joy’s words, “Art, to me, is a dance on canvas.”
Recent exhibits include displays at Oddfellow’s Gallery in Hattiesburg and Off the Tracks Gallery in Wiggins. She has also displayed numerous paintings in juried online exhibits of the Episcopal Visual Arts in New York City. Featured in the October 2013 issue of The Episcopal Journal was a painting of St. Peter’s-by the-Sea Episcopal Church in Gulfport.
