Dr. Max Grivno, USM History Professor, Lecture on Poe's Baltimore
News item published on: 2015-11-03 10:30:17Southern Miss history professor, Dr. Max Grivno, will discuss the history of Baltimore during Edgar Allan Poe’s life (1809-1849) on Thursday, November 12 from 6 - 7 p.m. in the Cook Library Art Gallery. Grivno will discuss the city’s rise, its thriving export economy, and its diverse population of free blacks, slaves, and immigrants. Poe, the writer known for his stories of the macabre, spent much of his adult and professional life in Baltimore ultimately dying there of an unknown ailment.
Grivno is an associate professor of history at The University of Southern Mississippi. He specializes in the Old South, slavery, labor history, and Mississippi history. Grivno’s first book, Gleanings of Freedom: Free Labor and Slavery along the Mason-Dixon Line, 1790-1860 was published in 2011. He is currently writing From Bondage to Freedom Slavery in Mississippi, 1690-1865 and is researching another book, Bandits, Klansmen, Rioters, and Strikers: Violence in the Alabama-Mississippi Black Belt, 1830-1917.
