Science Café at Cook Library will present the film “Decoding the Weather Machine” on October 22 at 6 p.m. in Cook Library room 123. Following the film, Dr. Tommy Patterson and Dr. Mark Puckett will lead a discussion on weather and climate change.

Patterson, a visiting assistant professor of geography in the School of Biological, Earth, and Environmental Sciences, specializes in tree-ring science, climatology, and forest ecology. Puckett is a professor of geology, and his focus is stratigraphy and paleontology. He specializes in a group of tiny fossils called ostracods, and uses them to study a variety of geologic processes.

“Decoding the Weather Machine” is a documentary by NOVA that cuts through the confusion around climate change. The film features scientists from around the world who are on a quest to better understand the workings of the weather and climate machine we call Earth, and discover how we can be resilient—even thrive—in the face of enormous change.

Faculty and students from The University of Southern Mississippi, as well as local professionals and experts, share their perspectives and allow participants to get to know the face behind the science in a relaxed and informal setting. Science Cafés are free and open to the public. No science background is assumed or required.
