The Big Picture and the Small Picture: What Can We Learn from Four Million Downloads?

When it comes to measuring the success of an institutional repository, one must look at both the big picture, such as the total number of downloads, and the small picture, how the repository content is being used. With Aquila, the IR at Southern Miss, nearing both its tenth anniversary and the big-picture milestone of four million downloads, this is an excellent time to look at how Aquila has promoted the university as well as the value of Open Access scholarship produced by Southern Miss faculty, staff, and students. This presentation will look at the top level data and statistics to see the big picture of Aquila’s reach, while also looking at several individual use cases to demonstrate how Aquila content has benefited individual researchers, scholars, and more.

Why should researchers at Southern Miss consider publishing their research in Open Access journals? How can faculty determine how to evaluate OA journals when compared to more traditional paywalled publications?
In this session, we will hear from faculty members who have experience with Open Access publishing, editing an Open Access journal, or using open textbooks in the classroom. Panelists will share their experiences, offer suggestions and strategies for others who may want to consider embracing OA for their own teaching and publication and provide strategies going forward to promote the growth of Open Access across campus.

This session seeks to explore Open Access efforts from a global perspective. Can there really be a “one size fits all” approach to OA, or will there necessarily be differences? If there are differences, can those models still be inclusive in their approach? The panelists will begin by discussing the work they are doing to promote OA in their contexts, along with the challenges they face. They will then turn to a discussion of how we can work toward models of OA in our own contexts that remove barriers to participation for researchers around the world.
