Gulf Coast Library is hosting Speak Out!, a Banned Books Week event, on Thursday, September 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the library. Banned Books Week, which takes place September 23 – 29, is the annual celebration of the freedom to read and to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

This year’s theme “Banning Books Silences Stories,” is a reminder for everyone to speak out against the tide of censorship. Volunteers may choose to read an excerpt from an assortment of books. Read from classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and The Giver or controversial picture books like And Tango Makes Three.

The Academic Success Center will be hosting a Banned Books Week photo booth. We invite you to snap a photo at the event and tag us on Facebook.

Celebrate your right to read with us by participating in this read-aloud event focused on banned and challenged books. This event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be served.
