BANNED: A Graphic Celebration of Banned Books Week

To celebrate Banned Books Week, illustration students in the Department of Art and Design’s graphic design program created posters depicting frequently banned and challenged books. BANNED: A Graphic Celebration of Banned Books Week is on display Oct. 5-21 in the Cook Library Leaning Commons Gallery.

As they developed their illustrations, students sought to encourage viewers to engage with the banned books in a positive way. Designed to be conceptually engaging and visually compelling, the posters reflect – and reflect upon – the books they depict. The diversity of approaches echoes the wide variety present in the books that have been banned throughout America and the world in recent decades. The American Library Association tracks books that libraries, schools, and bookstores have been asked to remove from shelves, and the books illustrated in this show come from that list. Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and promotes “free and open access to information.” The celebration also reminds readers of the dangers posed by censorship.
